BJ Sonnenberg, M.B.Ch.B.
Dr. Sonnenberg received his Medical Degree in 1989 at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. From 1991 to 1992 he served full time as a Medical Officer in the South African Defense Force. He went into private clinical practice in 1992 where he performed a wide variety of services, including regular family physician office work, surgery, obstetrics, gynecology and anesthesiology.
From 1992 to 1998 he was the team doctor for the Eastern Transvaal (Pumas) provincial Rugby team. In the same time period he was the Medical Director for a Tuberculosis Sanatorium in his home town (Witbank), where he was involved in international medication trials to treat multi-drug resistant tuberculosis.
In 1998 he was recruited by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta to come and work in Alberta. He worked as a Family Physician for 6 years in St.Paul Alberta, after which he moved to Edmonton in 2004.
He has been a Medical Consultant at WCB Alberta since 2004. He has been involved in the WCB Opioids project since 2006.
Since 2008 he has been the on-site physician for occupational emergencies at the Strathcona Refinery in Edmonton. In 2012 he started working as a part-time contracted medical provider for SureHire in Edmonton.
He has been involved in Opioid related research with the Department of Preventative Medicine at the University of Alberta, since 2015. Two Cochrane Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis Protocols have already been published (High-dose opioids for chronic non-cancer pain – July 25, 2016 and Adverse events associated with medium- and long-term use of opioids for chronic non-cancer pain – January 19, 2017).

Bio-Dr. Ritu Rani (MD, MPH (Clinical Epi.), FRCPC
Dr. Rani obtained her Undergrad Medical Degree in 1997 from the Government Medical College Patiala, in India. After moving to Canada in 1999, she did her MPH degree in Clinical Epidemiology from University of Alberta, in Canada. In 2004 she got accepted into 5-year residency training (from 2004-2009) in Occupational and Environmental Medicine, at University of Alberta. This program is a very unique branch of medicine which is designed to teach physicians medicine with focus on work-related issues. Some of the examples would be: Fitness to work; exposure assessments; causation; work-related diseases; health surveillance of employees; up-to-date knowledge regarding current provincial and federal regulations for employees and employers; etc.
Since graduating, Dr. Rani has gained great experience in the field of occupational medicine. She worked as a consultant with WCB (workers compensation board) for many years dealing with occupational injuries and diseases, and a great part of this practice includes assessing work-relatedness of the medical condition in question.
Another big component of her practice includes chronic pain management and disability management. The main goal is to help employees return to work in pre-accident or modified capacity and design a return to work program, acceptable to both employee and employers. This approach helps employees and employers retain gainful employment and prevent disability.
She has active designation of Assistant Clinical Professor with University of Alberta.
