In many safety sensitive jobs, not only is alcohol testing a requirement, but so is pre-employment drug testing. This practice is becoming mandatory with most companies who offer safety sensitive positions. Companies are realizing the dangers of allowing workers onto a site while they are under the influence of illicit drugs. The statistics show that when there is drug use in the workplace, there are more Workers’ Compensation claims, greater employee turnover, more absenteeism, higher rates of employee theft, and a greater chance of workplace violence.
SureHire provides pre-employment drug testing services to companies, as well as random and post-incident drug testing. Below is an explanation of the different types of drug testing services offered. If you have any questions, or would like to have a SureHire representative contact you regarding any of our specific drug testing services, call us at 1 (866) 944-4473.
Express Urine Drug Testing
We offer two options for urine drug testing. The first is an express test. The results of an express drug test are instant. It is also important to note that the results of an express test are qualitative, meaning that the results are either a pass or fail: the level of drug in the body is not determined.
5 Panel Drug Test
- THC (Marijuana)
- Phencyclidine (PCP)
12 Panel Drug Test
- THC (Marijuana)
- Phencyclidine (PCP)
- Ecstasy (MDMA)
The second option is a lab-based urine drug test. This can be done in addition to the express test or on its own. This type of testing provides a quantitative result, meaning that the levels of drugs in the body can be determined.
When a urine drug test is being sent to the lab, the standard practice is to do a 5-panel screen, but there is an option to do a 6-panel, 10-panel or even 12-panel drug screen.
- The 6-panel screen separately tests for Amphetamine and Methanphetamine. That is the only difference from the 5-panel test.
- The 10-panel screen tests for the following drugs:
- Tricyclic Antidepressants
Lab results are generally available within 2-5 business days.
Urine drug testing if often used to determine historical drug use and may not be an indicator of current impairment.
SureHire is the largest provider of oral fluid drug testing services in Canada, with years of knowledge and experience in this field.
Like urine drug testing, oral fluid drug testing can be express, with instant results, or sent to the lab.
The standard is a 5-panel drug screen including:
- Amphetamines (including methanphetamines)
- Cannabinoids (Marijuana)
- Opiates (Codeine, Morphine, Heroin, Vicodin)
- Phencyclidine (PCP)
If necessary, 10-panel testing can also be done at the lab. Oral fluid tests have grown in popularity because it is nearly impossible to use an adulterate to alter the results of the test, ensuring a highly accurate express test.
Oral fluid drug testing is often used to determine current impairment due to drug use, rather then historical drug use.
Currently, the market is saturated with DIY (do-it-yourself) kits because they are straightforward to use. Unfortunately, not all oral fluid drug testing kits are created equal. We recommend that companies never do in-house testing themselves. Although DIY testing may seem like an alluring option, tremendous legal liability is brought upon companies who choose to do any form of drug and alcohol testing in-house. SureHire is highly experienced in this field and is not affiliated with any one brand of test kits. We are constantly updating our technology to keep up with new advances in oral fluid drug testing so that we can serve our companies with the best technology on the market. If you would like more information on oral fluid drug testing and why it is growing in popularity, please contact our office at 1 (866) 944-4473.
This is the newest service offered by SureHire to detect drug use/abuse. Although this particular type of drug testing has been common in the United States for many years, it is only now beginning to gain popularity in Canada.
- The Process
Hair testing is simple, non-invasive process that requires donors to provide a hair sample of 1.5" (3.8 cm). If the donor is unable to provide a sample of hair from their head, body hair may also be used. That sample is sent to the lab to be tested. There is no form of express hair testing currently available. If a result is negative, results will be available within 1 business day, and if the results are non-negative results typically take 3-4 business days.
Currently, there are two options for hair drug testing. The first is to test for the standard 5 panels mentioned above and the second is to test for the standard 5 panels along with an extended opiates panel, which tests for specific prescription drugs that are commonly abused.
- Time Line
The distinguishing factor of hair drug testing that may encourage or discourage its use is the timeline of drug detection. Oral fluid tests for the shortest time frame of drug use (24 hours) and the time frame for urine testing is approximately 3 days – 3 weeks (depending upon the drug and the frequency of use). Hair testing comes in at the opposite end of the spectrum: a 1.5" (3.8 cm) sample can determine drug use in the past 90 days. It can also be broken into 30 day increments, because 0.5" (1.3 cm) is equal to approximately 30 days of hair growth. A hair test is able to pinpoint whether drugs were used, 30, 60 or 90 days ago.
- Hair Drug Tests Cannot Be Adulterated
One advantage of hair drug testing is that participants cannot alter their hair in any way to mask drug use. There are “kits” on the market that claim to mask drugs for a hair test, but these kits have been proven ineffective.
Because of this, and because of the long, “pinpointable” timeline it provides and the substantial reduction in cost since it was first introduced, hair drug testing is becoming increasingly popular in the court system.
SureHire’s hair drug testing services are intended solely to determine the presence of specific drugs for employment screening or law enforcement (including court ordered testing). The drug testing procedures performed are accepted throughout the forensic and law enforcement communities we service. All screened samples that are presumptive positive are run through an entirely separate confirmation process and are confirmed by GC/MC or GC/GC/MS, which is an accepted standard for forensic drug testing. Our services are not intended to be used for diagnoses or treatment of disease or a condition. All of our drugs of abuse assays for hair are conducted at our certified, state-of-the-art hair testing lab in Cleveland, OH.
