Urine Drug Testing
In many safety sensitive jobs not only is alcohol testing a requirement, so is pre-employment employee drug testing. This practice is becoming mandatory with most companies who offer safety sensitive positions. There are multiple dangers in allowing workers on to a site while they are under the influence of illicit drugs. The statistics show that when there is drug use in the workplace there are more Workers Compensation claims, greater employee turnover, more absenteeism, higher rates of employee theft and a greater chance of workplace violence.

Urine Drug Testing
Urine drug testing is by far the most common drug test performed in Canada. When considering employee drug testing, urine is usually the first thought that comes to people's minds, especially because urine testing is the requirment for many sites, to give pre-access to their employees. Policies such at the Canadian Model For Providing a Safe Workplace endose and mandate urine drug testing for many situations.
The main difference between, Oral Fluid Drug Testing, Hair Drug Testing and Urine Drug Testing is the drug detection time lines. Oral fluid is able to detect current drug impairment, hair is able to detect a long history of drug use (typically 90 days) and a urine drug test is, for most drugs able to detect drug use during the past week. THC (marijuana) is the one exception to this rule. THC may be detected for several weeks after use in a donor's urine, depending upon frequency/quantity of use, body mass, height, and even gender. For many companies and private individuals, a urine drug test provides the perfect time line for drug detection. It will not penalize the donor for drug use in the distant past, and is still recent enough to indicate whether an employee has partaken in drug use within the past few days.
Urine Drug Testing (Express & Lab Based)
Express Urine Drug Testing
We offer two options for urine drug testing. The first is a 5-panel express test. This tests for the following drugs: Amphetamines (including methanphetamines), Cannabinoids (Marijuana), Cocaine, Opiates (Codeine, Morphine, Heroin, Vicodin) and Phencyclidine (PCP). The results of an express drug test are instant. It is also important to note that the results of an express test are qualitative, meaning that the results are either a pass or fail, the level of drug in the body is not determined.
Lab Based Urine Drug Testing
The second option is to do a lab based urine drug test. This can be done in addition to the express test, or on its own. This type of testing provides a quantitative result, meaning that the levels of drugs in the body can be determined.
When a urine drug test is being sent to the lab, the standard practice is to do a 5-panel screen, but there is an option to do a 6-panel, 10-panel or even 12-panel drug screen. The 6-panel screen separately tests for Amphetamine and Methamphetamine. That is the only difference from the 5-panel test. The 10-panel screen tests for the following drugs: Marijuana, Cocaine, Amphetamine, Methamphetamine, Phencyclidine, Benzodiazepines, Tricyclic Antidepressants, Methadone, Opiate, and Barbiturates. Lab results are generally available within 2-5 business days.
