D.O.T. and non-D.O.T. Drug and Alcohol Testing
United States transportation law requires drug and alcohol testing of all employees in safety-sensitive transportation positions including trucking, railroads, aviation and pipeline. Any Canadian transportation company with employees involved in transporting goods into the United States must adhere to all Department of Transportation (D.O.T.) regulations including specific drug and alcohol testing requirements (Rule 49, CFR Part 40).
The United States D.O.T. has stringent regulations and procedures regarding how testing is implemented. Organizations and technicians undergo a rigorous certification process to be able to perform D.O.T. testing.
SureHire occupational testers are DATIA (Drug and Alcohol Testing Industry Association) and SAPAA (Substance Abuse Professional Administrators Association) certified to perform U.S. D.O.T. testing and administer U.S. D.O.T. third party administrative (TPA) services and random testing pools.
This means our testers are qualified to help your company ensure it meets regulations.
Transportation companies which operate solely within Canada do not fall under U.S. D.O.T. regulations for drug and alcohol screening. We recommend that these companies implement a comprehensive testing policy that includes: pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, post-incident, return to work, random and follow-up testing.
SureHire can assist companies in creating a drug and alcohol screening policy and it is our belief that this can reduce costs, improve efficiency and effectiveness, and enhance worker safety.
In addition, transportation occupations such as long-haul truck drivers are exposed to long periods of static posture, inactivity and whole body vibration. This places these individuals at an increased risk for high blood pressure and lower back injury, especially if the employee is required to perform lifting duties after long periods of inactivity.
SureHire health professionals can assess these individuals during pre-employment screening, and return to work assessments, for pre-existing medical conditions. We recommend a yearly follow-up to identify potential health problems and treat them before they develop into a worker's compensation claim.
