  • Albertans consumed 8.7 litres of alcohol per person in the year ending March 2002, compared to 7.7 litres across Canada.

Youth Statistics


  • In a 2002 survey, 5.3% of Alberta students (grades 7 to 12) used club drugs (ecstasy or crystal meth) in the past year

  • Most users of cannabis, hallucinogens and speed began use at between 15 and 19 years of age; users of cocaine and ecstacy tended to have begun use inn their twenties.

  • 15.4% of Edmonton adults used cannabis, or marijuana, in the year prior to being surveyed.  Use among Edmonton youth is nearly twice that figure, or 31.1% (27.6% across Alberta).

  • 63.4% of students had consumed alcohol in the last 12 months.
  • 31.3% of all students reported incidents of binge drinking.
  • The most commonly used illicit drugs are hallucinogens, with 9% of students reporting use in the past year.
